Super Mario Flag Jump Fail

Remember how in super mario games you always tried to jump to the top of the flag pole to get score the maximum points?
Well, I dont. Some people also have tried the legendary jump over the flag. I never tried that. How could I? I never succeeded in even touching the top of the pole.

I would carefully position myself on the top most step at the very edge so as to gain as much distance as I could, in hopes of conquering the top of the flag pole. Most the of the time what happened to me was, I would land just short of the flag pole base. Disappointed but not losing all hope. Then I would move all the way back to the base of the step pyramid and run towards the flag pole in desparation and take a leap only to score 100 points. It sucked. Someone has posted a technique to achieve this on the internet. I have not personally tried it but here it goes. One has to stand at the third or fourth step from the top, I forget which. After that jump and hold the B button. This apparently lands you perfectly at the rear edge of the top most step running at full speed and then you land at the top of the flag.
